Demonstrating your English language proficiency is an important requirement for the grant of a Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass482) visa. There are a few ways to meet the English requirements:

  1. Provide a result from a specified English-language test.
  2. Hold a passport from a specified country
  3. Be eligible for an exemption

English Language Testing

For many applicants, providing an English language test result will be the way to meet the English language requirement. The test score required will also depend on which stream of the TSS visa the applicant is applying for.

The 4 specified English language tests are:

  1. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  2. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
  3. Occupational English Test (OET)
  4. Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
  5. Cambridge C1 Advanced Test

From my experience as a migration practitioner, the IELTS and the PTE test are the most used tests used by my clients. As mentioned, the stream of your subclass 482 visa application will determine the required score for your English test.

Short-term stream occupations (e.g. Cooks, Marketing Specialists, etc.) will require one of the following test results:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Applicants must have a minimum overall score of 5.0, but no less than 4.5 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Applicants must have a minimum overall score of 36, with a minimum score of 30 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Occupational English Test (OET): Applicants must have a minimum score of 'B' in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT): Applicants must have a minimum total score of 35, with a minimum score of 3 in the listening and reading sections, and a minimum score of 12 in the writing and speaking sections.
Cambridge C1 Advanced Test: Overall test score of at least 154 with a score of at least 147 in each of the test components.

For medium-term occupations (e.g. Chefs, Welders, Engineers, etc.) the one of the following is required:

English Language Testing System (IELTS): Applicants must have an overall score of 5.0 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Applicants must have a minimum overall score of 36, with a minimum score of 36 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Occupational English Test (OET): Applicants must have a minimum score of 'B' in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT): Applicants must have a minimum total score of 35, with a minimum score of 4 in the listening and reading sections, and a minimum score of 14 in the writing and speaking sections.
Cambridge C1 Advanced Test: Overall test score of 154 with a score of at least 154 in each of the test components.
Hold a Passport from a specified country.

Another way to meet the English language requirement is to be the holder of one of the following passports:

Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States.
Exemptions.

There are a few English language exemptions available to applicants. These are:

  • The applicant has completed at least 5 years of full-time study in at minimum a secondary level institution.
  • You are nominated to work at a diplomatic or consular mission of another country in Australia
  • You have been the English language requirements for licensing in your occupation, and this level is higher than that mentioned in the English test scores mentioned above.
